Review: The Orphan
By Francisco Acuña
YEAR: 2009
DIRECTOR: Jaume Collet-Serra
PERFORMERS: Isabelle Fuhrman, Jimmy Bennett, Lorry Ayers and Vera Farmiga.
In my country some time ago Orphan release, the truth, I was not eager to see it, because it only looked like a pile of cliches and often seen, an evil child movie kind that much there.
The movie has a premise, presumably, pretty basic, a couple after the loss of a baby decides to adopt a girl of nine, q is not as innocent as it seems and everything is slowly turning into a nightmare for the family.
From Orphan to say that now is a movie more than correct with a very good suspense management, and somehow manages to excel in this wave of remakes and live mediocre products and horror movies in our time, is not a wonder, but emphasizes that, as we all know, the average of such productions is that they are basically evil, then any glimmer of originality and quality is overrated. What I explain is that if this production had been on the "golden years" the horror would have been just another piece of the heap, but with the drought we have now, a production like this can be lifted up more than they should.
Its director, Jaume Collet-Serra had already experimented with the genre of horror with the (entertaining, but nothing more) house of wax, now in this film greatly improves the management of stress, significantly lowering gore, not really I need but it would have been nice to see more hemoglobin, suppose that spared in this regard to make it more consumable for the average audience for the commercial, come on, that have something to eat.
The performances are very good, standing out above all Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther, holding that easily let us feel sorry for her kindness and hatred and disgust to his handler and decrepit character.
the script but is a little full of topics is bearable and at times witty, mainly with his turn in the plot, original, slightly stilted, witty and unthinkable, a success. T he characters soon come to us primarily interested in the tender deaf girl, star of the most emotional moments of the footage that yes, a little slyly exploiting his disability.
exteriors and music are good, not outstanding but if they give a disturbing atmosphere of the film, which for most of its duration I felt something was missing, as more effort and desire to do something lasting, it seems that the director and the writers did their job just received their cake and nothing else, maybe they were afraid or discouraged to go a step further, instead of doing something that it lacks a bit of soul, and has plenty of convention, without going too far can we make an example "The children" that moves through similar territories and also came out this year, where its very premise view was overshadowed by the excellence of almost all its aspects.
Finally, a movie I can recommend, that will not disappoint anyone who knows he will not find the movie of the year and a good example of how to handle the suspense.
best:
-Esther's paintings.
-The end credits of the best I've seen in a long time.
-management of stress.
Worst:
-A film that you forget the time.
"That from what I read, the more overvalued than they should.
"I lack" soul?
for me: 7.3/10
